In short: Every child gets to be the hero of their own book, and the book should look like them. That is the whole point of the product, so this policy is mostly about making sure the technology does not quietly get it wrong.
The Equality Act 2010 protects nine characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. We will not discriminate against anyone on any of those grounds, as a customer, a supplier or anyone we work with.
We are one person and a website. The usual substance of an equality policy — recruitment, promotion, pay — barely applies. What does apply is the book, and that is where we put the effort.
The child who orders the book is the main character. Not a sidekick, not the friend of the hero. That is true whoever they are.
Where a photograph is supplied, the illustrations are drawn to that child’s actual likeness — skin tone, hair, glasses, a wheelchair, a hearing aid. Where no photograph is supplied we work from the description given and do not fall back on a default.
AI image generation has well-documented biases and can drift towards a narrow idea of what a person looks like. We treat that as a fault to be caught, not an accident to be excused. If a book comes back not looking like the child, tell us and we will put it right.
You can add up to six characters. Two mums, one parent, grandparents raising a child, step-siblings, foster and adoptive families, a dog instead of a sibling — the form takes names and relationships as given and the story does not comment on them.
Books are written and illustrated for a British reader — British schools, streets, spellings and seasons — rather than defaulting to an American setting.
Making the site and the finished book usable by children with additional needs is an active piece of work rather than a settled one. It is set out separately in our Accessibility Statement, including what is done and what is not done yet.
Every story is checked before writing, while writing and before printing. Those checks exclude material that would demean any group of people. They are applied to every book on the same terms.
We expect the companies we buy from to meet their own obligations under the Equality Act, and we will not continue with a supplier who does not.

Reviewed annually and whenever the story or illustration process changes materially. Approved by the director.
