Kirsty and Rachel discover that the seven Rainbow Fairies have been scattered and hidden by wicked Jack Frost, leaving Fairyland drained of colour — and the two girls set out to find them one by one, starting with Ruby the Red Fairy. This is the book that launched the enormous Rainbow Magic series, and it established the winning formula: two friendly heroines, a fairy to find, a small quest, a happy resolution, and the promise of a whole rainbow of sequels to collect. Daisy Meadows (a house name) writes short, gentle, reassuring chapters with nothing to frighten anyone — Jack Frost is villainy of the mildest, most manageable sort. For a five- to eight-year-old just gaining reading confidence, especially one enchanted by fairies, the Rainbow Magic books are hugely popular precisely because they are predictable, cosy and endless: a child who loves one can happily read fifty, and the reliable pattern helps build fluency and the lovely habit of finishing a book.
