Kitty, who has inherited cat-like superpowers from her mother, is out on a moonlit adventure when a hunt for lost treasure and a frightened animal in need pull her into a night-time rescue that tests her growing confidence. Paula Harrison's Kitty series is pitched perfectly for a child moving from picture books into chapter books: short chapters, plenty of gentle illustration, and a heroine whose courage is always a little hard-won, which makes her bravery feel real and reassuring rather than effortless. The night-time city is drawn as beautiful rather than scary, quietly reframing the dark. There is no genuine danger, just small, satisfying rescues. For a five- to eight-year-old, particularly one who finds the dark daunting or is building reading confidence, this is a warm, magical, gently exciting read, and part of a much-loved series that reliably keeps newly independent readers turning pages and reaching for the next one.
