Our take on this book
Kitty's mother has cat-like superpowers and helps people by night, and Kitty has inherited them too — but Kitty is afraid of the dark, and unsure she can do what her mother does, until a frightened kitten stranded on a rooftop needs her to climb out into the night anyway. Paula Harrison's series opener is pitched perfectly for a child moving from picture books to chapter books: short chapters, plenty of illustration, and a heroine whose fear is the real subject and whose courage is hard-won rather than automatic. The night-time city is drawn as beautiful rather than scary, which gently reframes the dark for the reader as it does for Kitty. There is no real danger, just a small brave rescue. For a five- to eight-year-old, particularly one who finds the dark daunting, it is a reassuring, gently magical start to a long and much-loved series.
