Our take on this book
Isadora Moon is half vampire, half fairy, and does not quite fit at either the vampire school or the fairy school — so when it's time to start, she has to work out where a girl like her belongs, with the help of her beloved pink rabbit Pink Bunny. Harriet Muncaster's series is beautifully designed in black, white and a single signature pink, with intricate illustrations on every page, and its gentle message about being different and being yourself is woven lightly into a sweet, magical story. It is short-chaptered and richly pictured, ideal for a child moving from picture books into their first proper stories, and there is nothing in it to worry anyone. For a five- to eight-year-old, especially one drawn to fairies, vampires and all things sparkly-but-spooky, Isadora is an enormously popular heroine — the distinctive look and the reassuring theme have made this a favourite first chapter-book series, particularly with children who feel a bit in-between themselves.
