Environmental Policy

1. Print on demand, not print and hope

Publishing wastes books on a large scale. Print runs are guessed in advance, unsold copies come back from shops, and a great many are pulped.

Storywizard cannot work that way. Every book is one child’s story, printed only when it is ordered. There is no warehouse, no stock, no returns pile and nothing left over. It is the single biggest environmental thing about how we work, and it is a consequence of the product rather than a policy we adopted.

2. Our printer

Our print partner is a certified B Corporation. B Corp certification is independently assessed and covers environmental performance alongside how a company treats its workers and suppliers, and it has to be renewed. We chose a printer that had already been examined by someone other than itself.

3. Paper

Books are printed on cream stock supplied by our printer. We ask that paper comes from FSC-certified forestry. We do not own the mill or the supply chain behind it and we are not going to claim more visibility than we have.

4. Delivery

Books are posted using established postal and courier services, which carry a full round regardless of whether our parcel is on it. We do not offer next-day or express delivery, which is the shipping option with the worst environmental cost per parcel. Standard delivery is the default and it is free.

5. The business itself

• There is no office, no warehouse and no company vehicle.
• The business runs on hosted services rather than our own hardware.
• Almost everything we produce is digital — the only physical output is the book itself.

6. Energy used by the AI

Writing and illustrating a book uses computing power, and computing power uses electricity. This is a real cost and it is not zero. We keep it down by generating the full book only once an order is placed, rather than producing complete books for everyone who tries the site. The free preview is a cover and a synopsis, not a finished book.

7. What we do not claim

We are not carbon neutral. We do not offset. We have not measured our footprint, and a company of this size claiming a verified footprint would be worth very little. When we can measure something properly we will publish the number instead of the adjective.

8. Review

Reviewed annually and whenever our print or delivery arrangements change. Approved by the director.
