Milly-Molly-Mandy Stories

by Joyce Lankester Brisley

Ages 4–7 Reading age 6 Short chapters Set in everyday life gentlewarm

A girl in a village runs errands, keeps a shop for a day, minds a baby and goes blackberrying, one small adventure at a time.

A story about children and families, gentle and warm in tone. We would put it with children of 4–7, and at a reading age of about 6 for reading alone.

Our take on this book

In a little village, a small girl in a pink-and-white striped dress goes about the gentle business of her days — running errands, minding the shop, having a picnic, keeping a secret — in a series of tiny, self-contained tales first written in the 1920s. Joyce Lankester Brisley's stories are among the cosiest in all of children's literature: nothing alarming ever happens, the pace is unhurried, and the pleasures are small and real, mapped out on the little hand-drawn plan of the village at the front. Each story is short and complete, which makes it perfect for a chapter a night. There is nothing here to trouble anyone; it is warmth and simplicity from beginning to end. For a four- to seven-year-old it is a soothing, old-fashioned read-aloud — a window onto a slower world of thatched cottages and errands that many children find deeply comforting, and a gentle bridge towards longer stories told one small adventure at a time.

Chosen by matching age, reading age, tone and subject — not by what is selling.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
