An older sister looks back and tells, with enormous relish, all the appalling things her little sister did — eating the trimmings off the party cake, refusing to open her mouth at the dentist, disgracing everyone at a wedding. Dorothy Edwards wrote these stories in the 1950s to tell aloud to her own daughter, and it shows in their warmth and their perfect read-aloud rhythm: the naughty little sister is never a monster, just a small child behaving exactly as small children do, and the telling is fond rather than disapproving. Each story stands alone, which makes it ideal for a chapter a night. There is nothing here to alarm anyone; the drama is entirely domestic. For a four- to seven-year-old it is a gentle, funny, timeless read, and there is deep satisfaction for a young listener in hearing about a child even naughtier than themselves getting away with it, mostly.
