Alfie's Feet

by Shirley Hughes

Ages 3–5 Reading age 4 Picture book Set in everyday life gentlewarm

Alfie gets shiny new wellingtons for splashing in, and cannot work out why walking in them feels so wrong.

A story about children and families, gentle and warm in tone. We would put it with children of 3–5, and at a reading age of about 4 for reading alone.

Nothing flagged

We have not flagged any content in this one that a parent would usually want warning about.

Our take on this book

Alfie is thrilled with his splendid new wellington boots and stamps and splashes about in every puddle he can find — but something feels wrong, and it takes him and the reader a while to work out that he has them on the wrong feet. Shirley Hughes's picture book is a small classic of everyday life, drawn with her unmistakable warmth and her matchless eye for how real small children look and move and live in a real cluttered family home. The drama is tiny and completely absorbing to a young child, because getting your own shoes right is one of the first hard things you master. There is nothing to worry anyone here; it is cosy and true. For a three- to five-year-old it is a gently satisfying read about a small everyday triumph, and part of a beloved series whose ordinary domestic world children recognise instantly as a version of their own.

If they like this, try these

Chosen by matching age, reading age, tone and subject — not by what is selling.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
