Our take on this book

At Unicorn School every new girl is matched with her very own unicorn, and Mira is desperate for a sparkly, well-behaved one — but she gets Dave, who is greedy, badly behaved, obsessed with doughnuts and not remotely interested in glitter. Pip Bird's series works precisely because it undercuts the sugary unicorn genre: Dave is basically a naughty Shetland pony in disguise, and the comedy comes from Mira's dreams of unicorn perfection colliding with his reality. It is short-chaptered and heavily illustrated, ideal for a newly independent reader, and warm underneath the jokes — Mira and Dave become a real team by the end. Nothing here will worry a young reader; it is pure cheerful mischief. For a five- to eight-year-old who loves unicorns but has a sense of humour about them, it is a funny, big-hearted read that has become a runaway favourite.
