Our take on this book
The second collection of Winnie-the-Pooh stories brings the arrival of the bouncing, irrepressible Tigger to the Hundred Acre Wood, and moves, in its famous final chapter, towards the gentle, aching moment when Christopher Robin must begin to grow up and leave the toys behind. A. A. Milne's 1928 classic has all the warmth, wit and quiet wisdom of the first book: Pooh's muddled philosophy, Eeyore's gloom, Piglet's small bravery, and prose that is a joy to read aloud to a young child. Nothing frightening ever happens in the Wood; the mood is one of safety, friendship and gentle comedy, with a tender note of farewell at the very end that often moves the grown-up reader more than the child. For a three- to six-year-old shared aloud — or an older child reading alone — it is a timeless treasure, and the closing chapter is one of the loveliest, most bittersweet endings in all of children's literature.
