Luke's superhero brother Zack has lost his powers at the worst possible time, because the new gym teacher is taking a suspiciously keen interest in the school's fittest, strongest pupils — and Luke is fairly sure the man is not from around here, or indeed from this planet. David Solomons follows his award-winning My Brother Is a Superhero with the same winning mix of comic-book action and playground comedy, narrated by an ordinary boy stuck saving the day while the actual superhero is out of order. It rattles along with alien plots, daft gadgets and mild peril, all played firmly for laughs, so there is nothing here to frighten a reader. For an eight- to eleven-year-old who loves superheroes and jokes in equal measure, it is a fast, funny adventure; it works as a standalone but rewards readers of the first book, and it is a great pick for a child who wants action without darkness.
