My Brother Is a Superhero

by David Solomons

Ages 8–11 Reading age 9 Novel Set in everyday life funnyadventurous

Luke loves comics and knows everything about superheroes. His boring older brother gets the powers, because Luke had gone for a wee.

A story about children and families, funny and adventurous in tone. We would put it with children of 8–11, and at a reading age of about 9 for reading alone.

Worth knowing before you buy

None of this makes it a bad book — often the opposite. It is here so you can decide whether it is right for your child now or in a year or two.

Part of a series

This is book 1 of the My Brother Is a Superhero series, so there is more to read if it goes down well — which is worth a great deal with a reluctant reader.

Our take on this book

Luke is a comic-book fanatic who has always dreamed of getting superpowers — so it is monstrously unfair that when an alien hands them out, it is his dull, unworthy brother Zack who happens to be there, and ordinary Luke who must help save the world anyway. David Solomons's award-winning comedy is narrated by the aggrieved, comic-obsessed Luke, and the joke — that the wrong brother got the powers, and the powerless one does most of the heroics — powers a fast, funny, affectionate adventure. It is crammed with comic-book gags, daft villains and real sibling warmth, with peril kept firmly in the exciting-not-scary zone. For an eight- to eleven-year-old who loves superheroes and jokes in equal measure, it is a hugely enjoyable read that quietly tells every ordinary kid they could still be the hero. A winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and the start of a series children happily tear through.

Chosen by matching age, reading age, tone and subject — not by what is selling.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
