Little Badman and the Invasion of the Killer Aunties

by Humza Arshad

Ages 8–11 Reading age 9 Novel Set in school funnysilly

All the teachers are disappearing and being replaced by aunties with excellent samosas, and only Humza thinks this is suspicious.

A story about children and families, funny and silly in tone. We would put it with children of 8–11, and at a reading age of about 9 for reading alone.

Our take on this book

Humza Khan is convinced he is destined to be the greatest rapper the world has seen — 'Little Badman' — but his ambitions are interrupted when the town's aunties start behaving very strangely indeed, and it becomes clear that something distinctly not human is going on. Humza Arshad and Henry White write a fast, extremely funny sci-fi comedy narrated in Humza's brilliantly self-assured voice, rooted in a warm, specific British Pakistani community that rarely gets to be the centre of an adventure like this. It is heavily illustrated, briskly plotted and packed with jokes, with peril kept firmly comic. For a nine- to twelve-year-old it is a genuine laugh-out-loud read — the alien-invasion plot rattles along while the humour and the affectionate family-and-community detail give it real heart — and a series that has been a hit with children who see themselves in Humza and children who simply love a funny adventure.

Chosen by matching age, reading age, tone and subject — not by what is selling.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
