Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery
by Jeff Brown
Being half an inch thick makes Stanley the only person who can slide into a sealed Egyptian tomb and see who has been robbing it.
A story about children and families, funny and adventurous in tone. We would put it with children of 6–9, and at a reading age of about 7 for reading alone.
Worth knowing before you buy
- Mild peril
None of this makes it a bad book — often the opposite. It is here so you can decide whether it is right for your child now or in a year or two.
Part of a series
This one belongs to the Flat Stanley series, so there is more to read if it goes down well — which is worth a great deal with a reluctant reader.
Our take on this book
Stanley Lambchop, flattened to half an inch by a falling noticeboard, puts his unusual shape to good use — this time posted or flown off to Egypt, where being flat turns out to be exactly what's needed to slip into a pyramid and foil a grave robbery. The Flat Stanley books take one brilliant, simple idea and run it round the world, and this adventure has the reliable pleasures of the series: a likeable hero, a light mystery, and the constant comic potential of a boy you can slide under a door or roll up in a tube. It is short, briskly told and easy for a newly confident reader, with mild adventure and nothing to frighten. For a six- to eight-year-old it is an inviting, gently exciting read — the flatness gag never gets old, and the globe-trotting format means there's always another country and another scrape waiting in the next book.

Or let them write their own.
Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
