Horrid Henry's Nits
by Francesca Simon
Henry catches nits and decides that if he has to suffer the treatment, so should everyone else in the class, starting with Perfect Peter.
A story about children and families, funny and silly in tone. We would put it with children of 6–9, and at a reading age of about 7 for reading alone.
Nothing flagged
We have not flagged any content in this one that a parent would usually want warning about.
Part of a series
This one belongs to the Horrid Henry series, so there is more to read if it goes down well — which is worth a great deal with a reluctant reader.
Our take on this book
Horrid Henry gets nits, and rather than suffer alone he sets about sharing them as widely and vengefully as possible — especially with his insufferably perfect brother, Perfect Peter — in four fast, funny stories of schemes, sabotage and just deserts. Francesca Simon's Horrid Henry books are a phenomenon for a reason: Henry is gloriously, unrepentantly awful, and children adore him precisely because he does the outrageous things they only imagine. The stories are short, briskly told and studded with Tony Ross's scratchy cartoons, making them perfect for a child just gaining reading independence. Nothing here is frightening; the anarchy is entirely comic and Henry usually gets his comeuppance. For a six- to nine-year-old, especially one who likes a bit of naughtiness, these are among the most reliable early chapter books going — short enough to finish in a sitting, funny enough to demand the next, and a common turning point for a reluctant reader.

Or let them write their own.
Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
