Zog and the Flying Doctors
by Julia Donaldson
Princess Pearl, Sir Gadabout and Zog fly out to treat mermaids and lions, until an uncle decides princesses should not be doctors.
A story about magical creatures and children, funny and rhyming in tone. We would put it with children of 3–6, and at a reading age of about 5 for reading alone.

Our take on this book
Princess Pearl, Sir Gadabout the knight and Zog the accident-prone dragon now work as flying doctors, treating a sunburnt mermaid and a sneezing lion — until Pearl's snooty uncle the king locks her up, declaring that princesses simply do not become doctors, and it takes some quick thinking to change his mind. This sequel to Zog carries a gently feminist message lightly, wrapped inside Julia Donaldson's bouncing rhyme and Axel Scheffler's warm pictures: Pearl is cleverer and more useful than the king's outdated ideas allow, and the story lets her prove it. There is nothing to alarm a young reader; the tone is sunny throughout. For a three- to six-year-old it is a funny, big-hearted read-aloud with a strong heroine and a satisfying comeuppance for the uncle, and the quiet point that a girl can be whatever she is good at reaches a child without ever slowing down the story.

Or let them write their own.
Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
