Auggie Pullman was born with a severe facial difference and has been home-schooled all his life, but now, starting Year 6 at a real school, he must face a corridor full of children seeing him for the first time — and the novel tells the story from his point of view and, in turn, from the viewpoints of those around him. R. J. Palacio's phenomenon is a warm, funny, deeply moving book about kindness, difference and the choice to be good, and its shifting perspectives quietly teach a reader to see the same events through many eyes. It deals with bullying and staring and cruelty, but its overwhelming spirit is one of hope and compassion, and it is never frightening. For a nine- to twelve-year-old it is close to essential — hugely popular, genuinely empathy-building, and adored by children and teachers alike — a book whose simple message to 'choose kind' has stayed with a great many readers well beyond childhood.
