Fidge is flung, along with a plastic carrot and her little sister's cuddly elephant, into the world of that little sister's beloved picture book — a land where the toys are life-sized, the rhymes are law, and a red plastic rabbit called Wed Wabbit has installed himself as a tyrant. To get home she has to solve the place like a puzzle, with the least promising companions imaginable. Lissa Evans wrote something genuinely original and very funny here, shortlisted for the Carnegie: it is an adventure, a puzzle-box and a sly study of grief and family all at once, because the reason Fidge is so angry turns out to matter. There is mild peril but nothing frightening, and the wit is sharp enough to keep an adult reading aloud entertained. For an eight- to eleven-year-old who likes a story that is clever as well as funny, it is a real treat and completely its own thing.
