Little Rabbit Foo Foo
by Michael Rosen
A rabbit rides through the forest bopping everyone on the head with a mallet, until the Good Fairy runs out of patience with him.
A story about animals, funny and silly in tone. We would put it with children of 3–6, and at a reading age of about 5 for reading alone.

Our take on this book
Little Rabbit Foo Foo rides through the forest scooping up the mice and bopping them on the head, ignoring the increasingly cross warnings of the Good Fairy — until his behaviour catches up with him in a suitably transforming way. Michael Rosen turns the old playground chant into a gleefully repetitive picture book, made to be sung and acted out, with Arthur Robins's cartoonish pictures adding to the fun. The pleasure for a small child is entirely in the repetition and the anticipation — chanting the refrain, groaning at Foo Foo's naughtiness, and relishing the Good Fairy's mounting exasperation. The mild comeuppance is played for laughs, with nothing to frighten. For a three- to five-year-old it is a joyous, interactive read-aloud — the kind of book that gets a whole group of children joining in, jumping and bopping — and a lovely, silly lesson about consequences delivered entirely through rhythm and repetition rather than any telling-off.

Or let them write their own.
Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
