Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears

by Emily Gravett

Ages 4–7 Reading age 6 Picture book Set in everyday life funnyspooky

A mouse records everything that frightens him in a scrapbook, chewing the corners of the pages as he goes.

A story about animals, funny and spooky in tone. We would put it with children of 4–7, and at a reading age of about 6 for reading alone.

Nothing flagged

We have not flagged any content in this one that a parent would usually want warning about.

Our take on this book

A small mouse keeps a scrapbook of everything that frightens him — spiders, the dark, loud noises, being sucked down the plughole — recording each fear on a page he then nervously nibbles, so that the book itself is torn, stained and chewed at the corners as you turn it. Emily Gravett's inventive, award-winning picture book turns a child's anxieties into something to laugh at and handle, with real feathers, maps, newspaper cuttings and holes worked into the pages so the object feels wonderfully real. It names the mouse's fears with their proper phobia words, which older children enjoy, and the spookiness is entirely playful. For a four- to seven-year-old, particularly a worrier, it is a reassuring, funny way to look fears in the face and find them a little bit ridiculous — and the intricate, interactive design means there is something new to discover every single time it is opened.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
