Beast Quest: Sepron the Sea SerpentAdam Blade

Beast Quest: Sepron the Sea Serpent

by Adam Blade

Ages 6–9 Reading age 7 Short chapters Set in somewhere magical adventurousepic

The second beast is destroying the fishing fleet, and Tom must dive to free it from the enchantment holding it.

A story about children and magical creatures, adventurous and epic in tone. We would put it with children of 6–9, and at a reading age of about 7 for reading alone.

Worth knowing before you buy

None of this makes it a bad book — often the opposite. It is here so you can decide whether it is right for your child now or in a year or two.

Part of a series

This is book 2 of the Beast Quest series, so there is more to read if it goes down well — which is worth a great deal with a reluctant reader.

Our take on this book

Tom and Elenna's second quest sends them to the coast, where Sepron the sea serpent has been enchanted and the fishing villages are starving because no one dares put to sea. Free the Beast, and the waters are safe again. This follows the reliable Beast Quest formula that has hooked so many young readers: one Beast, one clear mission, short fast chapters and a mounting sense of the hero's growing courage. Adam Blade (the series' house name) keeps the action moving and the victory clean, and the collectible Beasts give children a reason to want the next one, and the next. There is monster-peril throughout, but it is thrilling rather than frightening, and always resolves in triumph. For a six- to nine-year-old, especially one who needs momentum to keep reading, this is dependable fuel — the kind of book that turns a child who 'doesn't like reading' into one working through a whole series.

Chosen by matching age, reading age, tone and subject — not by what is selling.

Or let them write their own.

Nothing gets a child reading like a story they invented themselves. Your child plans the characters and the plot, and we write, illustrate and print it as a real book with their name on the cover as the author.
