Our take on this book
Amelia Fang is a young vampire who would rather play with her pet pumpkin than attend her parents' balls, and in this adventure she and her friends must venture out of the comfortable gloom of Nocturnia into the eye-wateringly bright, relentlessly cheerful kingdom of the unicorns to rescue someone who has been taken there. Laura Ellen Anderson's series flips the usual palette: darkness is home and safe, and it is glitter and rainbows that are alarming, which children find delightfully funny. It is short-chaptered and gorgeously illustrated by the author, easy for a newly confident reader, and its spookiness is entirely of the cute-monster variety with nothing to cause a bad dream. For a seven- to ten-year-old who likes their stories a little bit goth and a lot funny, Amelia is a charming heroine, and this is a bright, silly, warm-hearted adventure in a very likeable world.
